Beginners · Two days
Basic Rider Course
- Best for: little to no motorcycle experience
- Prerequisite: ability to ride a bicycle
- Format: two full days (7:45 AM–5:00 PM) covering fundamentals step by step
- Testing: Didn’t pass? Free MSF retake class.
- Endorsement: after you pass, take your waiver card to the Colorado DMV (allow a short waiting period for processing) to add the M endorsement
Experienced · One day
Basic Rider Course II
- Best for: experienced riders (for example dirt-bike or unendorsed street riders) who already handle clutch, throttle, and low-speed maneuvers
- Format: one day — skips many Day 1 basics of the two-day course
- Skills screening: the day starts with a skills check. If you don’t pass screening, we move you into a standard two-day Basic Rider Course at no additional cost
- Testing: If you fail the skills test, you’ll generally retake the full two-day class for a thorough refresher at no extra cost. If you pass skills but don’t pass the knowledge test, you return for another Basic Rider Course II (based on availability)
- Endorsement: same waiver card path to the Colorado DMV after you pass
Our recommendation: if you haven’t ridden recently or you’re unsure which class fits, enroll in the Basic Rider Course. You’ll get more seat time, and you won’t risk a skills screening on day one.
After you pass
- You receive a license waiver card when you pass the course tests
- Allow a short waiting period for processing, then take the original card to the Colorado DMV (appointment required)
- The card is typically good for 180 days from the date issued — add your M endorsement before it expires
- No separate written or riding test at the Colorado DMV when you use the waiver card

I’m brand new. Which class should I take?
The Basic Rider Course. The only prerequisite is the ability to ride a bicycle. It’s a two-day class built for riders with little to no motorcycle experience.
I already ride a dirt bike / street bike without an endorsement. Can I take the one-day class?
Yes — Basic Rider Course II is designed for riders who already have clutch, throttle, and low-speed skills. The day starts with a skills screening. If you don’t pass screening, we move you into the two-day Basic Rider Course at no additional cost.
What if I’m rusty or not sure?
Choose the Basic Rider Course. Skills like clutch and throttle control fade quickly, and the two-day refresher is worth it.
Do both classes lead to the Colorado M endorsement?
Yes. Pass either class and you get a waiver card. After a short waiting period, take the original card to the Colorado DMV (appointment required) to add the endorsement.
