BRC or BRC II: Which Class is Right for You?

January 27, 2026

Basic Rider Course (BRC)

  • Best For: The MSF BRC is for beginners with little to no experience. The only prerequisite is the ability to ride a bicycle.
  • Format: A two-day course that teaches riding fundamentals step-by-step designed for those who have never ridden a motorcycle.
  • Testing: Enrollment includes two attempts for both the written and skills exams. If you are unsuccessful after two attempts, you must return for additional training in a future BRC class at no extra cost (based on availability).
  • Endorsement: After passing the class, take your completion card to the DMV (allow 4–5 business days) to add the endorsement to your license.

Basic Rider Course II (BRC II) License Waiver

  • Best For: BRC II is for experienced riders (e.g., dirt bike or unendorsed street riders) who already mastered clutch control, throttle control, and low-speed maneuvers.
  • Format: A single-day course that skips many of  the Day 1 basics of the standard BRC.
  • Screening: The day begins with a skills check. If you do not pass this screening exercise, you will be moved to a standard two-day class at no additional cost.
  • Testing: Same retest policy as our other class. However, if you fail the skills test, you will generally be required to retake the full two-day class for a more thorough refresher at no additional cost. Those who pass the skills, but fail two attempts at the knowledge will have to return for another BRC II class (based on availability).

Recommendation: If you haven’t ridden in a while or are unsure which class is right for you, choose the BRC. Skills like clutch and throttle control perish quickly, and the two-day refresher is highly beneficial.
